Let your flexible friend save you up to 50% - VISA deals Dubai

Now let's be honest, as much as I am a fan of The Entertainer, unless you plan in advance where you're going to go, then you'll be doing some serious weight lifting as you venture out in the city with the books under your arm. This could save some money on gym membership if you look at the positive, but frankly its a bit of a drag!

But in Dubai our flexible friends from VISA and Mastercard are falling over themselves to also help us have a great time and reduce the expense too, and we simply forget to ask for our discount when paying.

Here's the extensive current list from VISA for any of you with Gold, Platinum or Infinite cards, with up to 50% on several activities including desert safaris and creek tour floating restaurants. Not a bad deal, for a piece of plastic that's sitting in your wallet everywhere you go.

Cinema VOX Gold - Do it 2 for 1 and never go economy class again!

Recently went and saw the latest Bond movie, Skyfall. Not only a great movie with just the right balance of action and spy thrills, but a story line that contrary to the previous Daniel Craig episodes I could actually keep up with. That probably says more about me, than the film itself. Anyway, more to the point, get yourselves an 'Infinite Visa' credit card from the growing number of banks that offer them and you'll be enjoying Buy One Get One Free on VOX Gold cinema tickets for months ahead. I barely noticed the length of the film, with a nice comfy reclining armchair, snacks brought to me at my beck and call, and blankets to keep me snug from the usual arctic conditions of the UAE's cinemas... frankly I didn't want to leave!

Downside is you do need to buy the discounted tickets at the cinema itself, not online. You can however avoid the queues and go straight to the Gold cinema reception to buy your tickets, and can pop in several days or weeks before the show if you think its going to be a box office hit. But 120 Dhs saving between every two makes it a cracker of a deal, and a thumbs up to the cinema on those burgers.

In Dubai this deal seems to be at both Mall of Emirates and Mirdif City Mall.

Brick Lane helps to spice up Sunday dinner

Now, there's not so many Buy One Get One Free deals in my trusty Entertainer book for home delivery cuisine beyond the mountain of pizza establishments that Dubai has to offer. An exception to this that every Expat should get familiar with is the Brick Lane Indian takeaway that do accept the vouchers for delivery too.

Give me a butter chicken and a peshwari naan any day. Probably not one for those counting calories, but now and again a special treat. Unfortunately, together with a stash of similar BOGOF vouchers courtesy of a Time Out special a few months back I've been enjoying Brick Lane as a weekly ritual - oh well, there's always the gym!

Drinks, food and entertainment...my local Barca Club has it all.

After a late lunch out I really didn't need another restaurant visit in the same day, but this is Dubai so who's to judge.

Popped along to The Barca Club on the Palm Jumeriah this evening. A great live band playing mostly acoustic guitars and singing popular covers to a packed and appreciative beer garden audience.

Caught the tail end of the weekend deal, 4 drinks and a meal for 99dhs from 12 to 7 every Friday and Saturday. Some good options in the meal list from salads and pastas to more casual snacks and the usual selection of wines, beers and a few house cocktails. You just can't go wrong. I'm told similar deals are still running at Cabana and Bidi Bondi's too, and that smells like the making of a weekend bar crawl to me. Happy days!

Gallop down to The Stables for a great bargain lunch deal

After enjoying a great mini escape weekend away at the Towers Rotana, courtesy of a prize from the What's On magazine earlier in the year, we stumbled across The Stables and stopped by for a late lunch.

The Stables opened earlier this year, located literally next door to Fibber Magee's. An interesting building with clearly an equestrian theme. The top floor restaurant is now only used for private functions so its primarily a bar restaurant nowadays.

Anyway, we took full advantage of the Saturday to Thursday 12 to 3 offer and had a meal and drink for a bargain of 49dhs. That included a good sirloin steak too!

Check it out if you're in the area. They seem to do a tempting Friday brunch carvery too so one to add to the list.
